Children with hydrocephalus asking for help..

We have a steady flow of people who come at our door for help, some come to ask for transport money back to the village. They were admitted in the hospital and discharged, but no money anymore to travel back to their village. Other people come for reading glasses, which we receive to give out to people. Sometimes people come for help to buy medicines which are prescribed by the doctor and there is also a group of mothers who come with their child who is suffering from hydrocephalus  (water in the head). Sometimes the heads are huge and very heavy to carry. The mothers are struggling so much, they come with the baby to Amecet for help, it is very hard to carry the child, they have to be very careful with supporting the head, which is too heavy for the neck.

I am so impressed with those mothers... They all love their child and they struggle to care for them. Most of the time, the father left them and looked for another wife, because he said, a child like this is not mine...... So the mother goes on in the struggle to care for the child. Amecet can't do so much for them, we listen to them, help with medicines when they have no money to buy. When they go to the hospital with the child, they are referred to a hospital in Mbale, CURE hospital. Mbale is a city, 2 hours drive with public transport. It is a specialized hospital for children with Hydrocephalus and Spina bifida. The fluid around the brain gives pressure and often the children are operated and will get a shunt placed to drain the fluids from the brain. The mothers have to come regular for doctors visit to Cure hospital. Amecet helps them to give the transport money, to travel to Mbale. Sometimes they come with the child and the child is not doing good, the child may faint all the time, so then we give money to go to Mbale, earlier then their appointment.

At the moment we help 6 mothers with a child who is going regularly to Cure hospital. We also give them some food supplements and we are listening to them when they visit us. My heart goes out to the mothers, they continue in loving their child, travelling with public transport, carrying the child during those travels. And often  they are on their own, the husband left them and most of the time relatives get tired too of helping them.

When you read this, just say a prayer for these courageous mothers, who will go for their child till the end...
