Robbert was the first victim, and he was just doing so well, gaining, happy and playing.. He is feeling miserable now. Chickenpox might be a normal childhood sickness for many of us, but for malnourished children with a low immunity, it can be a killer. When I heard in the morning, a couple of days ago, when I arrived in Amecet, that we had 3 children with chickenpox, my heart almost stopped. And my mind went back to 2005, when we had a chickenpox outbreak in Amecet. Many children got it and also some of the aunties. Two children died because of the chickenpox, both children were HIV+ and new in Amecet, they were very, very weak and this sickness was just too much for them.
This time we have only one child who is HIV+, she is not strong, so she is kept far from the sick children. I am so proud of our medical team, they are on top of it!! They moved some children to another room, set good guidelines for the rest of the staff. We started with three children sick, today, 3 days later. there are four children sick and one auntie. The children are smeared with calamine lotion, it helps against the itchiness and with Robbert, there are now open wounds, he is put on antibiotics, to prevent infection. Robbert was the worst, he had also wounds in his mouth, but today he is smiling again, and he is eating..

Tom is also one of the victims, he is not so strong, so we were scared that he would lose a lot of weight again, but no, he is still eating and he is quite happy and playing.

it is not easy, but we play with the sick children in a separate place (was suppose to be the sandbox) with their own toys. Trying to entertain them. We want them to be separate from the other children. There is one staff with them and that staff is not touching the baby's, that day. The staff is doing well, and we pray that no other auntie will get sick, because getting chickenpox as an adult is no fun. Pray for us, that we have had the worst and no more children and staff will get it.
