Elijah's story.......

Gepubliceerd op 12 januari 2021 om 12:05

This morning I went with Elijah back to the Orthopedic doctor in Soroti Hospital. I went together with Peace, one of our staff, because Elijah doesn't like me so much, I don't know why, but I don't want him to be stressed, so his big friend Peace carried him. It is good that he can express his favorite aunties, I really tried to become friends with him, but no, maybe because I always go with him to the hospital and he doesn't like the doctors either!! The braces, Elijah wears at night are becoming too small, so we went for a bigger size.....

This is his story: on July 7/20 we were called by the Orthopedic doctor from Soroti hospital, A young mother had died, leaving a 3 week old baby behind. We drove to the hospital and met Elijah, (the doctor had given him his name), he was born with an emergency caesarian operation and the mother had died 3 weeks later, because lack of blood, there was no blood available in the hospital. The mother was still in the primary school, father not around. The baby was born with deformities on both legs, also the fingers on both hands are a bit deformed and one eye was not opening well. His both legs were in a cast, the right foot was a clubfoot and the left knee was rotating. The baby was in need of intensive care and had to come back every week to the hospital to change the cast. The family of the mother lived far  in the village, they were unable to do this.

In the beginning we went every week to the hospital, the cast was then removed (Dominique is soaking in a bucket with water) and he was given new plaster again. In the meantime we also went to the Physiotherapy and we were taught the exercises we could do with his fingers. On our Rota in Amecet two people were written to do exercises with Elijah every day. (which he didn't like very much).

In the beginning of August, they stopped the cast and he was given braces. He didn't like that either, but got used to it quickly, he had to wear them day and night. Everybody was trained in putting them on, because he got a way to get one foot out and that would not be good for his foot.. He had to wear them for 3 months and in the beginning of November, we were told that we could let them off during the day, so, only at night.... Elijah has a problem at his left knee, it rotates, we had to make X-rays and he needs probably an operation when he is a bit older... Every day we do the exercises with him, with his legs, and also with his hands. He is growing well, he doubled in weight, he likes to play a bit and he has his favorite aunties (not me..)

We are excited for Elijah, but you can see on this picture that his left leg is not good. But today I heard again from the doctor that he believes that Elijah will walk!! It only will take a lot of time... Please pray for wisdom for us, we are worried that the family will not be able to give him the time and care he needs, we also see that we in Amecet are limited, we do our best, but he might need more than we can give...

                                    THIS STORY WILL BE CONTINUED.................

We ask your prayers for our country Uganda. In two days there will be the elections for the President. There is a lot of unrest and violence....

Please pray for peaceful elections.
